BYP Podcast: Behind the Smiles with Kwame

In this Behind the Smiles episode, Kwame shares an experience many professionals of colour will recognise but rarely talk about: microaggressions that slowly chip away at confidence, clarity, and career progression.

It wasn’t overt racism. It wasn’t written in an email. It was something quiet, but just as mentally draining. And for Kwame, it changed everything.

Here are three takeaways from his story:

  1. Microaggressions Aren’t Always Loud
Kwame defines microaggressions as subtle forms of discrimination, intentional or not, based on things like race, age, gender, disability, or sexual orientation. In his case, being the only Black man in a team mostly made up of white women created a disconnect. His work ethic didn’t seem to “match” theirs, and he was constantly called out. At first, he thought it was racism until a fellow Black colleague told him, “I’m not treated that way, maybe it’s your approach.”

  2. Workplace Culture Shouldn’t Make You an Outcast
The tension grew. Conversations didn’t feel inclusive, and Kwame struggled to connect. When he raised his concerns, the manager said it was just “how things worked here.” Instead of a resolution, he got. Looking back, Kwame says better communication on his part might have helped, but he also believes no one should be forced to carry the burden of fitting in at the cost of their mental health.

  3. Inclusive Culture Starts with the Right Conversation
Kwame now urges companies to create space for everyone in daily conversations. Whether it’s discussing the news or learning about each other’s interests, inclusivity doesn’t stop at policies; it’s about how people feel in the room. He also warns against “cultural fit”, an unspoken culture that makes people feel like they either need to mould themselves to fit in or be left out entirely. According to him, when inclusion isn’t practised, talent gets overlooked.

Kwame’s story reminds us that inclusion is about making everyone feel a sense of belonging.
