Coventry Building Society Product Owner Anthony Opoku Shares How He’s Steered His Internal Career
How long have you worked at Coventry Building Society, and what attracted you to them as an employer?
I‘ve worked at the Society for almost 4 years. I was initially attracted by the size and reputation of the Society, being one of the largest building societies in the UK. At that time, the upcoming technology transformation programme intrigued me. I saw it as a unique opportunity to witness and contribute to a comprehensive end-to-end technology overhaul. I initially joined as a Business Analyst and was particularly impressed by the support structure and career trajectory outlined by my interviewers. Their commitment to developing BAs and providing clear paths for career progression was a significant factor in my decision to join the Society.
What has progression looked like for you here, and how have you been supported on this journey?
Progression at the Society has surpassed my experiences elsewhere. My journey has been shaped by a blend of formal training and strategic job moves, which have enriched my professional growth.
One pivotal experience was being selected for the inaugural cohort of the Ethnicity Career Development Programme (ECDP). This programme is designed for individuals from ethnically diverse backgrounds. It provides invaluable tools to overcome career barriers, hone leadership skills in a supportive environment, and receive regular guidance from a dedicated senior leader sponsor.
Throughout my time here, I’ve had the opportunity to transition through various roles, allowing me to broaden my skill set. I started as a Business Analyst, and within two years, was promoted to a Senior Business Analyst, followed by a Release Train Business Analyst. Most recently, I’ve embarked on a new path as an Identity Access Management Product Owner, despite not having a cybersecurity background. My transferable skills were recognised by the Society, demonstrating their belief in my potential.
Moreover, I’ve actively sought and succeeded in stretch opportunities. I volunteered to be in a working group which helped our senior leaders think through the topic of ‘Leading Teams Through Transformation’, I’ve shared my ECDP experiences with over 600 colleagues in our Customer Service function, and I‘ve spoken to our executives about what I think could be done to tackle racial barriers in our organisations. These experiences have been instrumental in developing my skills and advancing my career.
The Society has consistently provided opportunities for me to grow, both through diverse roles and through the initiatives mentioned above. This blended approach has been critical to my career progression and personal development.
Could you tell us more about the Black Network at Coventry Building Society?
The Black Network started in late 2022 by colleagues of African and Caribbean heritage. The aim of the network is to increase the visibility and impact of Black people within the Society and the financial services industry, as well as to support Black talent both inside and outside the Society. The Network wants to help the Society and our colleagues better understand the Black experience, which can often be misunderstood.
The Black Network serves as a dedicated safe space exclusively for Black colleagues, fostering an environment where colleagues can share experiences and support each other. We want to create a psychologically safe environment that boosts Black colleagues’ confidence. We also host monthly drop-in sessions for allies to engage with the Black Network, which are separate from our regular network members' meeting.
Over the last 2 years we have consulted on the ECDP, fundraised for our corporate Charity Centrepoint, created key event celebrations such as Africa Day and Windrush Day. Our landmark event in 2023 was a Black History month celebration event that included stalls of African history, Black British art, books by Black authors, as well as an introduction to music and dancing from Black origins.
The network is still in its infancy, but I am excited to see what more we get to do over the next few years, as our endeavours have been warmly received by the Society!
How do you feel your work and future ambitions align with Coventry Building Society’s values?
The Society has CARES values – Caring, Ambitious, Responsible, Empowering and Straightforward.
Caring - I want to continue to work in a more inclusive workplace, and I believe the Society has the same desire. Networks such as the Black network supports colleagues in bringing their authentic selves to work where they can thrive.
Ambitious - Ambition is at the core of my career goals, especially as I aim to progress within the Society’s growing IT & Change function. The Society’s significant investment in technology excites me and aligns perfectly with my passion for innovation and continuous improvement.
Responsible - The longer I have worked, the greater I have desired to work for an organisation that makes a positive impact beyond its interests. The Society is achieving this with its partnership with “Progress Together”, which aims to enhance socio-economic diversity in the financial sector.
Empowering - Additionally, I have experienced firsthand how the organisation recognises and nurtures talent, providing opportunities for professional growth and development. This motivates me to strive for excellence and take on new challenges. I believe this perfectly embodies their Empowering value.
Straightforward - Lastly, the value of being Straightforward reflects my perennial approach to work – being transparent, honest, and clear in all aspects of my delivery.
It's been a rewarding journey so far, I'm looking forward to seeing what else the future holds for me here!
