For Robert, leadership is about being a connector, bridging gaps between professionals, fostering relationships, and creating spaces where people can access opportunities they might not have found otherwise. Whether it’s introducing members to the right people, sharing mentorship opportunities, or guiding professionals toward new career paths, his role is deeply rooted in community-building.

“As a Chapter Lead, one of my favourite aspects is being a connector for my community. Whether it’s in-person events where I encourage people to network or behind-the-scenes work to meet other members in the chapter who are working on phenomenal projects and may need additional support, it all comes down to finding the right opportunities for our members.” – Robert Newman

Leadership Beyond Perfection

One of Robert’s guiding principles is that leadership isn’t about being perfect; it’s about showing up consistently, even when things don’t go as planned. He understands that moments of doubt and exhaustion are inevitable, but what truly defines leadership is the ability to persist and adapt.

“One of the best pieces of advice I received was that it’s okay to feel nervous, scared, or incomplete because 9 out of 10 times, the people around you won’t even notice it. Leadership is about showing up. Period.” – Robert Newman

This mindset has helped Robert navigate the challenges of leadership while staying committed to his mission of supporting and uplifting his community.

Growth Beyond Borders

Through BYP, Robert’s leadership journey has extended beyond his immediate industry. He has gained insights into the experiences of Black professionals across finance, education, healthcare, and tech, strengthening his ability to engage with diverse professionals and make a greater impact.

“BYP has helped me to grow my networking skills beyond the office jargon I learned as a younger professional. Now, I feel just as confident attending networking events for educators, healthcare professionals, and tech startups as I do stepping into a museum.” – Robert Newman

Beyond his work with BYP, Robert’s passion for gardening mirrors his leadership approach, nurturing growth, cultivating spaces for development, and fostering an environment where people can thrive. His rooftop garden in New York started as a small initiative and has since flourished into a thriving space, just like the community he continues to build at BYP.
