Senior Manager – VAT Policy & Risk Management, Amazon Tax Advisory & Planning Team
Description
The Senior Manager will lead the organisation’s VAT risk governance across multi-jurisdictional operations. This hands-on leadership role combines deep technical VAT expertise with proven experience in designing, embedding, and continuously improving VAT risk frameworks and assurance programmes.
The role ensures operational practices are robust, scalable, and fully aligned with regulatory obligations, while providing actionable insights to senior leadership and proactively mitigating VAT exposure.
The Senior Manager will work closely with tax colleagues, business operations, internal audit, and risk monitoring teams to embed controls into business processes, challenge operational readiness, and influence decision-making across the organization.
Key job responsibilities
• Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of VAT risk and assurance frameworks, control methodologies, and operational procedures.
• Oversee assurance activities, guiding analysts in data collection, testing, evaluation of control effectiveness, and review of VAT requirements developed by VAT advisory teams.
• Critically review VAT requirements from VAT advisory teams to identify gaps, weaknesses, or conflicts prior to operational rollout.
• Foster cross-functional collaboration with business, operational, risk management, and VAT teams to embed robust controls into daily operations, implement process improvements, and ensure alignment with organisational objectives.
• Challenge operational readiness for new controls and processes, reviewing UAT outcomes, SOPs, and minimum standards before launch.
• Report to senior leadership on VAT risk exposure, assurance findings, and remediation progress with clear, actionable recommendations.
• Maintain a dynamic and adaptive VAT assurance programme, evolving with regulatory changes, business growth, and operational complexity.
• Support the integration of VAT risk considerations into regulatory changes, strategic initiatives, and operational transformations.
Basic Qualifications
- Extensive VAT advisory experience, with deep expertise in VAT risk management, governance frameworks, and operational de-risking.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret complex VAT legislation, evaluate operational impact, and translate requirements into practical, scalable controls and processes.
- Experienced in leading multi-disciplinary teams, integrating VAT policy, assurance, and operational functions, with accountability for aligning technical interpretation with operational execution.
- Strong track record in multi-jurisdictional environments, including managing cross-border VAT risks, understanding differing regulatory frameworks, and influencing senior stakeholders across business, legal, and operational teams.
- Experience in large, matrixed organisations, ideally with exposure to regulated industries, operational complexity, and high-volume transactional environments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Preferred Qualifications
- Recognized professional tax qualification, chartered accountant, or relevant legal degree.
- Experience in Top-tier consulting or advisory firms (Big 4 or equivalent) or VAT professionals with strong advisory experience in multi-jurisdictional contexts, who have designed and implemented governance frameworks, managed VAT risk, and led assurance programmes that de-risk operational exposure.
- Proven leader and mentor, fostering high-performance, accountable teams with a culture of quality, rigor, and continuous improvement.
- Experience in Large corporate environments (ideally highly regulated): VAT leaders with practical experience embedding controls, driving operational decision-making, and proactively mitigating VAT risk across business processes and systems
- VAT advisory and risk management expertise: Professionals with extensive experience in VAT advisory and risk management, focused on identifying, managing, and mitigating VAT exposure within complex operational environments.
