Principal Engineer, Health (Search Vertical)
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field or equivalent practical experience.
- 15 years of experience in software development and with data structures and algorithms.
- 10 years of experience with ML/AI algorithms and tools, deep learning, or other AI/ML modeling.
Preferred qualifications:
- PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, or related fields.
- Experience in LLM related model fine tuning, large language models, or building or product enablement exploration.
- Experience in applying machine learning approaches to real-world personalization problems.
- Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., TFX or TFlex). Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Excellent mathematical skills, with knowledge of statistical methods.
- Ability to influence without authority, working on and with technical and cross-functional or highly matrixed teams who do not report into this role to get things done.
About the job
As Principal Engineer, you will drive and execute the technical strategy for Google Search's critical Health engineering space. This is essential to Google because it directly and critically impacts user trust, safety, and the long-term continued utility of Search in the high-stakes health information domain.
In this role, you will utilize expertise in technical architecture decisions, ability to analyze into unique systems (e.g., Search, Ads, Gemini model stacks), distributed systems, and product Integration (i.e. cross-product areas) and work on fast moving problems that transcend technical areas like personalization with policy/legal/regulatory compliance aspects. You will build a core Health team within Search and work across a horizontal engineering group across Search and the company. You will contribute to the long-term strategy for Search and influence Google DeepMind (GDM) and be fully accountable for the strategic direction, cost, methods, and overall performance of the Health engineering organization.

Responsibilities
- Be responsible for health core quality (i.e., response quality in AIO/AIM, factuality, helpfulness, structure, etc). Address work/headroom horizontally.
- Be responsible for Health and Connected Apps/Google Health integration.
- Be responsible for Health collaboration to upstream core headroom.
- Be responsible for Health experience in AIO/AIM.
